Share This With All the Schools, Please

Please, 7/8 A, read this and tell me if you think we should do this. I think so. We had kind of a rough week, but I want you to know, there isn't one of you that I wouldn't throw my arms around if I saw you walking down the street ten years from now. Please know that I care about each and every one of you.

Weekly Update: Feb. 3rd to Feb. 7th

Grade 7's

Please know:
  • the seven steps of the scientific method
  • the three states of matter
  • the four changes of state (or 6!!! Bonus!)
  • Be able to draw a 'normal' substance in the three states of matter and draw water (an anomalous substance) in its three states of matter.
To help you learn about water, watch this video:

Grade 8's

Please know:
  • these parts of the plant cell: cell wall, cell membrane, vacuole, nucleus and stomata. Be able to label them on a diagram and tell me their function. See my website for details.

Grade 7's

know the scientific method steps, the three states of matter and the four changes of state. Also, be able to draw water molecules in their liquid state: cold, room temperature and hot.

Grade 8's:

Know the 7 characteristics of living things, the cell theory and how to store (put away) a microscope properly.

Weekly Update: January 20 - 24

general announcements:

  • All chocolate fundraising is over! Please make sure to submit your money to Mrs. Bibby Smith.
  • There are still some grade 8 students who have not passed their microscope test. Please see me MONDAY morning, first nutrition break in the Homework room.
  • I will be running Homework Club Monday, first break, if you would like Science help.
  • I will have two Make Up Science classes this week: Tuesday, 1st break and Friday 1st break. Please come to see me if you require any and all assistance!
  • GRADE 8's: Know - the 7 characteristics of living things, the cell theory and the proper way to store a microscope.
  • GRADE 7's: Know - the steps to the scientific method. BONUS: be able to draw a model of what water molecules would look like at room temperature.

8A - Microscope Labs #1 and 2 will be due at the end of class.

7B and 7C Science: We will repeat some of what we did last week. We will have a mini Quiz on the Steps of the Scientific Method; however, you can do it again next week and pick your best mark. Sounds fair?

7/8A Language: You spelling for week 7 - activities and test will be due today.
Your finished, good copy of your January Writing Response will be due today. On the Cloud or paper - your choice.

7D Science: Know the steps of the Scientific Method! There will be a quiz. You will be able to start your first Science Experiment!

7/8A Language Homework

January writing response:

We are working on Persuasive writing: convincing an audience to favour one side of a topic over another. Pre-writing activities are due on Monday. They include:

  • Choosing a topic
  • Researching a topic
  • Creating a graphic organizer to help you generate ideas and sources of information regarding your topic.
Success Criteria for January Writing Response Part A:
I will:
  • choose a topic that has two definite sides
  • use proper spelling and grammar
  • have it ready by Monday morning
  • get as many resources and points as I possibly can
  • use a graphic organizer that will help me prepare for my essay.

January Newsletter

General Announcements:


  • Chocolate Sales: Due January 10th - all money and/or all unsold products returned to me in room 23.
  • Make-up Science Classes - Tuesday, January 7th, Thursday, January 16th, Friday, January 24th

Language Arts:

  • Oral Communication: We will be finishing up our Debating Unit during the first week of January, making room for Drama!
  • Reading/Media Literacy: we will be continuing to read news articles during class, looking for bias and audience, and will be introducing a novel study before the end of January.
  • Writing/Working with Words: We will continue to work on our editing and proof reading skills, with a focus on Grammar. There will be some homework to accompany our continued spelling words.

Grade 7 Science:


  • Chemistry unit begins this month, focusing on solutions and mixtures. Students will need to learn the steps of the scientific method:
    1. Question
    2. Background Information
    3. Hypothesis
    4. Materials
    5. Procedure
    6. Observations and Collection of Data
    7. Analysis of Data
    8. Communicate your results and conclusion
  • There will be scientific experiments during class time, with some analysis of data as homework. These scientific experiments will be the majority of mark during this unit, with weekly quizzes and a final unit test as well.

Grade 8 Science:

  • Our Cells unit will be conducted using microscopes and the scientific method. 
  • Each class will involve a lab in which students will learn different aspects of the cell. These labs will be mostly completed in class, with some analysis of data as homework. 
  • All notes will be online; if a student requires the notes to be printed out, please make sure to see me during class or Make-up Science Class.
  • There will be no project with this unit; assessment will come from lab reports and a final test.
