Weekly Update for Feb. 25 - Mar 1

What a great week we had this past week! We did Air Experiments, Gummy Bear Experiments, a Field Trip to Conestoga College... !!

Please remember, if you have work for me to mark, please label it with your FULL name, class and the date. This is just a good habit to get into. You might be the only Taylor in my class, but I teach about 5 Taylors all together... And when it is all together in my Hand In Bin, I don't know which class it's come from. Thank you.
Next week...

7/8A Advisory: Mind Map with Goal (good copy) due with IF/THEN chart.

7/8A and 8B Science: Begin experiments in Heat, Temperature and Conduction.

7B/C and 8C Science: WHMIS Test! and Introduction to Osmosis, and, if time: AIR experiments!

8D Science: Continue with the Introduction to Fluids. If you have a textbook, please continue the Questions I have assigned. I will send them to you on the Cloud to remind you what to do.

Wednesday, Feb. 20th

Class 7D Science:

YOU ROCK!!! Holy cow! You all designed such amazing experiments today!! I love it! And even though your Gummy Bear Experiment is not due until Friday (or Monday, if you need to do a redo) so many of you have it already done!!! YOUR ENTHUSIASM IS FANTASTIC! In celebration - no homework (except gummy bears). Well done!

Class 7/8A Advisory

Well done today with your mind maps. The one error was you have to make it a specific (not too specific) goal that you can attain by JUNE 22nd. Why then? You tell me! Why would I pick that date?Due for next week: If/then statements for each of your problems that get in the way of your goal. AND... 5 mins: exhale, inhale.

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

Happy Birthday Nicolaus Copernicus!

Today is the birthday of Nicolaus Copernicus (polish pronunciation - Nikolia Kopernik). This Polish mathematician and astronomer was the first to develop the theory that the Sun was actually the centre of our universe, not the Earth. This is called the 'heliocentric model'. Many say that the publication of his book and theory was the dawn of the Scientific Age, or the Scientific Revolution.

Class 8C Science:

A.  Next Science Period you will have a test on the 8 WHMIS Symbols. You should also know what WMHIS stands for!

B.   By FRIDAY, I need you to hand in:
5 Household Products, their WHMIS labels and the Classes. For example:
Needles(okay, not in everyone's house, but as Kassie pointed out, it is a household item if you are diabetic):
- Class D3. Poisonous and Infectious Materials, Biohazards infectious material.

C.   Observing Osmosis Experiment - (the Gummy Bear Assignment)
This will be due by Friday, March 1st. I would like you to write it up in Scientific Experiment Format (unless you have accommodations in Science - then you can write on your Experiment papers and that can be your good copy. ) Come by for your Gummy Bear.

ALSO, ANY work that you owe me is due by Friday!!!

Tuesday, Feb. 12/13 7/8A and 7D

Advisory 7/8A:
We discussed Mental Contrasting (see, "How Children Succeed", by Paul Tough, © 2012). It involves being BOTH optimistic- concentrating on a positive outcome, and pessimistic - concentrating on the obstacles in the way. Oettingen and Duckworth (scientists quoted in the book) suggests doing this, "creates a strong association between future and reality that signals the need to overcome the obstacles in order to attain the desired future." They suggest to create specific plans in the form of if/then statements, such as, "If I get distracted by TV after school, then I will wait to watch TV until after I finish my homework."

I am asking you to make a mind map: in the middle, I want you to draw/write a goal you might have for June of this year. I want you to think about the obstacles or problems you suspect are going to get in the way of that goal and list ways to overcome those obstacles. You can draw/write your strategies OR create a chart with if/then statements, if you aren't a 'spatial'/artist person. Due next Advisory Period.

Class 7D Science:
Wow! What a cool class you are! I enjoyed our discussion today. So, Homework:

For Next Science Class (Feb. 19th): you will have a test on the 8 WHMIS Classifications and symbols. You will need to match the symbol to the class, BUT I am going to leave one of the symbols out and you will have to draw it and label it. (Don't worry - I will pick an easy one to draw). Also, you will need to provide THREE examples of household substances that have WHMIS classification symbols on and be able to tell me what class they belong to! Very important and useful information!! I have just given the WHMIS sheets to Mme Ghazarian so you will get them tomorrow. STUDY!

AND:

I handed out an experiment today - THE GUMMY BEAR EXPERIMENT. The papers I handed out are your rough copy notes. I expect you to write up your experiment using the scientific method steps. While this is an 'At-Home' experiment, you are welcome to come in to my make up science class and record the mass of your Gummy Bear, and get any help you want with this experiment. I will expect the good copy to be handed in (electronically would be wonderful!!!) on - FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22ND.
